About Borrow a Boat
Borrow A Boat is the definitive marketplace for boat charter worldwide featuring peer-to-peer listings. Setup in 2016 by boat enthusiasts, it is currently listing over 13,000 boats in around 50 countries.
Our mission is to open up boating and make it more accessible and easier to access for the masses. We are aiming to get more people involved with boating and sailing holidays by bringing more choice of boats and a greater variety of locations to the charter market. In addition, we believe in better value charters, straightforward booking and a hassle-free boating adventure. We simultaneously want to help boat owners reduce the cost of boat ownership, by giving them the platform to list and charter their boats.
For as long as anyone can remember boating has been perceived as the preserve of the wealthy. High upfront costs to buy boats are compounded by high running costs, which are typically 10% of the cost of a boat. And yet paradoxically, those fortunate enough to own a boat find that they hardly ever use them, with many boats rarely leaving their marinas. This is for a variety of reasons: primarily lack of time or upkeep and maintenance chores getting in the way of boating. All further cost and time burdens on boat owners.
In parallel, boat ownership is in decline, along with boat sales. Boat ownership peaked in the 1980s with the baby boomer generation buying the most boats, and it is this generation that still owns most boats today, with the average boat owner age rising.
Embracing the sharing economy
But this does not mean that people don’t want to go boating! It’s more that the economics of ownership and disposable income, plus social trends away from owning things, have all conspired to create this effect. Experiences are the new ownership, with younger generations caring less and less about ownership. Products are more often becoming services in today’s fast moving web and app-driven world, and trends such as authenticity and activities with fast social-media friendly results are on the rise. Adventure tourism and new experiences are embraced by the youth of generations X and Y today, but ownership is in decline. We don’t tend to own our mobile phones these days, or our cars – so why would we want to own a boat?!
At the same time there is a rise in the sharing economy, pioneered by the likes of Airbnb, Uber, and others. Making assets pay can now be a perk of ownership as the general public has got used to peer-to-peer services. And what better way to improve the ownership experience of an expensive asset that you have little time to use than to allow it to pay for itself by letting it be used by others when you’re not using it? In a controlled, managed, safe way, all on your terms.
So Borrow A Boat is the go-to online marketplace that ties all of this together and solves several problems for several groups of people at once. We’re bringing the sharing economy to boating – we want to help boat owners get more from their ownership experience, and at the same time get more people out on the water and boating. More easily than it’s ever been before.
Improving accessibility and choice
We are building up our database of boats fast, and are seeking to have all kinds of boats, in as many locations as possible. Everything from a RIB or small day boat, to a holiday yacht, motor cruiser or luxury superyacht. We are bringing a mixture of privately owned, managed boats and charter boats, providing maximum choice for the consumer.
We are shaking up the world of charter, offering more types of boats in one place. Pirate ship anyone? Turkish gulet? Vintage cruiser? We are making boats available in more marinas and locations. To further improve accessibility, we have plans for an app coming later in the year which will enable you to search close to your location, click and book.
We are also bringing flexible booking, with short term bookings. Previously it hasn’t really been possible to take a yacht out for a 2-3 day trip whilst already away on holiday. But wouldn’t it be nice just to experience big boat sailing for a day or two?
No experience necessary
And no experience is necessary! Boating is not the preserve of the wealthy or qualified. Our boats are available with skippers on board if required. Book a boat and tick to add a skipper as an extra option. The skipper will serve you on your trip and can discuss route options and locations. But ultimately you decide where you want them to take you; just lie back and enjoy the ride. Or if you’re lucky, they’ll let you hold the tiller and try out the helming of a ship. You never know, it might just give you the bug to get a skipper’s licence and take one out on your own next time!
