Snow or Sea? – A comparison between sailing and skiing holidays
Eager to embark on a new adventure? We can’t blame you really. Everyone likes to experience something new and explore the world in all its beauty. For us, a boating holiday is the perfect opportunity to have an adventure. Nothing beats sailing across the open waters, exploring beautiful coastal towns and looking out into the horizon in admiration. But there seems to be a common misconception that you have to pay an arm and a leg to experience life at sea.
Here at Borrow a Boat, we’re dedicated to defying this myth and offering boating holidays at an affordable price. With our packages, you can book an adventure for the same price, and often lower, than a skiing holiday. And whilst we may be a bit biased on this – we think that exploration via the waves can be equally as adventurous, if not more so. Here are a few reasons why a boating trip can make for the ideal adventure holiday.
Contrary to popular belief, a boating holiday costs less than you might expect. In fact, it can even be cheaper than a skiing holiday. Let’s do the maths…
To go skiing you would be looking at the following estimated expenses:
- Flights and transfer – £150
- Accommodation – £175
- Lift Pass – £225
- Ski Hire – £100
Total Cost: £650 per person + food and drink
The rough cost of hiring a 3 cabin sailing yacht between six people and exploring Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast for a week would come to:
- Flights and transfer – £150
- Charter Fee – £172
- Mooring Fees – £80
- Extras (compulsory transit log, fuel budget, optional outboard engine) – £50
Total Cost: £452 per person + food and drink
So for a lower price, you could borrow one of our boats and sail around one of the many exquisite European coasts.
These are rough guides on the cost for both types of adventure holidays – prices will vary between resorts and locations.
Both of these holidays do have additional costs for beginners but the Croatian coastal voyage is still the cheaper option. A first time skier would require a week of skiing lessons (around £200), making the total cost of the holiday £705 pp. Boating beginners will need to pay for a skipper (£155 pp), as well as a fee to upgrade to a 4 cabin boat (£33 pp), bringing the total cost of the boating holiday to £490 pp. Regardless of your boating or skiing expertise, in this case a boating holiday is still the more affordable of the two.
Not only this, eating out can be expensive in the mountains. On a sailing holiday you have the freedom to explore various dining options at varying prices. Plus, all you need for your boating trip is a decent pair of shoes and some sunnies – there’s no need to spend a small fortune buying ski wear. So forget about all of the old wives’ tales you’ve heard – touring by water is not as expensive as you think.
Adventure travel all year round
Skiing is great fun, however, with most destinations you’re restricted as to when you can ski. Skiing holidays are confined to the chillier months of the year, with most European ski resorts opening between mid-November to April. Very few hospitable locations provide conditions for skiing all year round. Our boat hire on the other hand is open all year round. So, if you’re looking for an adventure holiday but don’t want to wear a coat, a summer sailing holiday is the perfect option!
Have your adventure in peace
Ski slopes can be pretty noisy. Surrounded by various tourists, wannabe ski professionals and countless families, it’s hard to get any peace and quiet while exploring your surroundings. Not to mention the constant potential for a collision when either you or a fellow skier loses their footing (or went a bit too hard at apres). The ocean, on the other hand, is a little quieter to say the least. You don’t have to catch a button lift up the mountain to experience the feeling of almost infinite space either. With your sailing adventure, you can plan your voyage to ensure that you can explore in peace – besides any fellow voyagers who may sail on by.
While we’ve focussed on adventuring and exploring, a boating holiday doesn’t need to be energetic and activity driven all day long. Particularly if you hire a skipper to navigate yourselves across the water, you can sit back, relax and take it all in. Sea air in your hair, waterside views all day long. In fact, just the sight of water has been proven to de-stress and aid sleep.
Broaden your horizons, quite literally
While there’s opportunity to explore with a skiing holiday, your adventure is limited to the confines of your resort (or the amount you dished out on your ski pass) for the entirety of your stay. On a sailing adventure you can explore countless coasts, visit different areas everyday and experience a wide variety of scenery. After all, the ocean is pretty huge, so the opportunities are endless.
Think about how many people you know who have been on a skiing holiday. Now compare that to the number of people you know who have been on a sailing holiday. It’s a pretty big difference, right? It seems obvious to us which one is the more adventurous option. Our boat charter trips will give you the opportunity to gain an experience that not many will be able to match.
We think we’ve made a pretty convincing argument. If an adventure is what you seek, then look no further. Embark on your voyage by booking with us today.
